 | US500 T.D. Wagner & W.L. Trenholm Bond 1868 Bond no. 1338 issued by Theodore D. Wagner & William L. Trenholm on behalf of John Fraser & Co. & Fraser, Trenholm & Company to James Robb & Charles T. Lowndes. This item is signed by T.D. Wagner & W.L. Trenholm on the front & by G.A. Trenholm as guarantor on reverse. George A. Trenholm was one of the most important figures of the Confederacy, serving as Treasurer of the Confederate Staes & one of the chief financiers & bankers of the Confederate cause. His firm was a premier operator of blockade runners & he made millions by stockpiling cotton, prior to the war, & reselling in Europe. He was taken prisoner by Federal troops & remained in captivity until he was paroled by President Andrew Johnson. The character Rhett Butler in 'Gone With the Wind' is reputed to be based on George & originally went to England to work for a branch of the family firm, but returned to serve as a Captain in the Civil War. T.D. Wagner was a clerk to John Fraser & Co. & married Esther Constance Trenholm. An historical classic. EF.

US480 American Express Company Certificate for Capital Stock of 2000 shares, $500 shares dated 1860/1 signed by Wm Fargo (1818-81) as Secretary, Henry Wells (1805-78) as President & countersigned by Alex Holland as Treasurer. One of the rarer types of the early American Express certificates. The Company was formed in 1850 & the first public shares were issued in 1853. Wells had started the express business in 1841, personally carrying cash and parcels from Albany to Buffalo in a carpet bag by stage coach and train. The Company is still going strong today! Fair condition, which is usual in these particular pieces.
